What is a<span style="color: var(--primary-color-bg);">&nbsp;Life Group?</span>

What is a Life Group?

At Horsham Church of Christ, we support a network of Life Groups to encourage believers to follow the ‘Acts 2:42 model’ of meeting together to read and apply scripture, pray for one another and enjoy fellowship. While the Sunday Worship Service offers communion, as well as opportunities to serve, connect with and lead others, it is the Life Group that enables greater discovery and depth or relationship with God and with others.

As a church of over 200 people, we encourage ongoing connection, conversation, and accountability through Life Groups so that every individual will be seen, known, and valued. Life Groups are the primary place for pastoral care and the first group to reach out to in times of need. A Life Group is an invitation into deeper discipleship; empowering believers to see themselves as disciples, following Jesus and helping others to do likewise. 

Acts 2:42 - They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

We are disciples who:

We seek to remain connected to Jesus through:

  • Spending time with Jesus in prayer, worship, and reading the Bible.

  • Prioritising time with Jesus personally, while also gathering together each week for worship as a Church.

  • Being filled with the Holy Spirit and choosing to live empowered by His presence rather than relying solely on our own willpower or being shaped by the influences of the world.

John 15:4 - Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

We seek to learn from Jesus and allow His Word to shape every area of our lives through:

  • Recognising Jesus as the Way, the Truth and the Life in every circumstance; not just on Sundays, but in all areas of life, including spiritual practices, relationships, priorities, resources and finances.

  • Learning from Jesus through Scripture, recognising the Bible as God’s Word and allowing it to shape our understanding, decisions, and actions.

  • Living a life set apart for Jesus; a holy life that belongs to Him, is lived with Him, and is available for His purposes.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 - All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

We seek to be transformed by Jesus into His likeness, expressed through:

  • Becoming like Jesus, allowing internal transformation to shape our outward lives through wholehearted worship, acts of service, and genuine care for all people.

  • Making disciples through evangelism, serving, practical help and teaching within our local and international communities, with the hope that others may come to know Jesus as Lord and Saviour.

  • Living an obedient life, seeking to honour God with integrity in both the small and significant things of life, living for His glory and responding faithfully to His call.

Matthew 28:19-20 - “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

We meet in the Horsham West area from 6pm. The earlier start time works well for our child-friendly group. We’re a group of 10 people at different stages of life and in our walks with Christ. It has been such a blessing to see the group the Lord has brought together to know Him more. Our Cavoodle provides a little ‘pet therapy’ so being allergy-free around cats and dogs is essential.

A Home in Horsham

We are a multigenerational group who love delving into the word of God and wrestling
with challenging questions about how to apply and live out what we discover. We
usually share and pray for one another, and discuss and unpack the scriptures from the Sunday sermon. Prepare to be challenged to grow! We occasionally have an earlier start to have dinner together. I highly recommend this group if you like discussing curly questions and have a good sense of humor!

We are a family-friendly group who want to grow in Christ and support one another through life. Each fortnight we catch up, pray together, and open God's Word. Many of us have kids, who come along and hang out together while we meet. We typically wrap up with supper and try to keep the evening to about an hour and a half.

Our Life Group is for anyone aged between Year 12 and 30yrs. We gather together to
read God’s Word and make time for solo reflection, sharing in pairs and as a
whole group. We finish with a time of prayer and enjoy hanging out together.

How do I join a Life Group?

If you are new to Horsham Church of Christ:

This is the ideal time to join a Life Group. This is the best way to grow in relationships, find belonging and discover more of Jesus alongside others.

If you have been baptised:

We recommend that anyone who has been baptised joins a Life Group. This group of care and discipleship will be a key next step in continuing to grow in faith.

If Horsham Church of Christ is your church home:

To help create belonging at church, join a Life Group to connect more deeply with the work God is doing in and through His church.

If you would like to start a Life Group:

We love seeing God’s kingdom grow. The possibility of a new group can be discussed with our Life group coordinators.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Imagine arriving at a house or the church on a weekday. Friendly faces welcome you, someone asks how you’re really going, and perhaps you’re offered a cuppa.

You settle into a circle and begin sharing life; what’s been happening, what’s been challenging, and what you’re thankful for. You pray together, reflect on the sermon, or open the Bible with the expectation to encounter God through His Word. You read, ask questions, listen, share, and discover that sometimes you’re learning from others, and sometimes they’re learning from you.

Perhaps a verse stands out, a familiar truth takes on new meaning, or a question sparks thoughtful conversation. There may be different perspectives and honest disagreement, but through it all, you find unity in Jesus.

As the time together unfolds, you’re invited to consider how God’s truth applies to your own life. You pray for one another, encourage each other, and take another step towards becoming more like Jesus. Perhaps you finish with sharing supper, a conversation at the door, or plans to catch up during the week.

Every Life Group looks a little different - the people, place and rhythm - but each group exists to help faithful followers grow in God, care for one another, and remain faithful to Jesus.

We encourage believers to study God’s truth for revelation, not just information. This happens in Life Groups by not only reading His Word but also discerning His truth in our personal lives. This may include…

  • Exploring the Sermon further
  • Studying a particular book of the Bible
  • Working through Bible Study material from an external resource
  • Sharing personal stories/testimonies
  • Looking into topics of interest

We encourage you to begin by attending a Life Group Lunch so you can meet others and engage in two-way discernment about whether they might be the right ‘fit’ for you. Each Life Group has its own identity, some are better suited for families, or young people, or those with a multicultural background. The Life Group Coordinator and Life Group Facilitators will be best to talk to about finding the right Life Group for you.

You can reach out to our Life Group Co-ordinator or the Church Elders (elders@horsham.org.au). At this time Rheinard Korf (Chair of Elders) and Tanika Thorne (Generations Pastor) are responsible for overseeing Life Groups. 

We love seeing God’s kingdom grow. Perhaps you would like to start a new group in your area on a different day or maybe at a different time to the options available now.

We have a Life Group Facilitators Handbook to help with this initiative as well as prayer support and the backing of a network of Life Group facilitators who meet on an ongoing basis.

Please note that establishing a new group might take a few months.

We will support you. Growing and leading with God is a journey and there is no expectation to have it all sorted. Through scripture and support from others, you will be given all you need as you seek to be obedient to God’s call. Trust God and reach out to the LG Coordinator or other Facilitators when needed.

We encourage you to ask your LG Facilitator if there is anyone else in the group who can assist you by picking you up or dropping you home.
